Branch libraries are thriving.

A community group organized to block the closing of libraries in the neighborhoods where they are needed the most, and a year later all of them are open…

“It was inspiring to see a group of dedicated volunteers work so hard,” says Karen Mellor, library program manager for the state Office of Library and Information Services. “It’s also remarkable what they accomplished in a short period of time.”

Very cool. I used to see a periodic threat to all the small branches in the name of cost-cutting. I have a friend who told me about the Washington Park branch. They had a fine collection including many Black History books that was stored in a damp warehouse and completely ruined. They were accepting donations last I heard. I went through my books and picked out some of the best, knowing they would find a good home there.

If you find that getting around in your house is becoming difficult due to large piles of books–you know who you are–consider picking out the ones that are too good to give to a place that might pulp them, and donate to the libraries.
