Not Her Department

I’ve been bothered about the snarky news items about beauty contestant Carrie Prejean’s politics and allegedly scandalous photos.

She’s not a politician, or a community organizer, or an editorial writer. What is she doing as the poster child for Focus on the Family? And what’s so terrible about a woman whose career is her appearance posing for pinups? It’s bizarre that beauty queens are supposed to display their bodies on the runway, but one centimeter too much makes them a Bad Girl. And the sight of Donald Trump bestowing forgiveness– it’s a hard job she has.

Anyway, Keli Goff is a voice of reason here, and sets out some common sense and decency…

Watching the three-ring circus that has been the fallout from Hilton’s grilling of Prejean, I have been amazed at how gleeful a number of liberal writers, bloggers, outlets and activists seem at their “gotcha!” moment. It is the same joy that many often have when a conservative gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar — and the cookie jar happens to be a woman he is not married to, or a man he is not married to, (or a minor he is not married to.) There is just one catch that makes this situation different, actually a few of them. Number one Miss California wasn’t running for office. Heck, she wasn’t even running for Miss America. The fact that there is no talent portion in the Miss USA pageant and no academic scholarship (save for some acting classes) tells you all you need to know about the role their intellect is meant to play in the pageant (and probably their long-term careers).

What goes around comes around. It’s a kind of pretzel logic to stand for tolerance of adult, consensual sexual behavior and then play ‘gotcha’ over a few ‘topless’ photos. It seems mean, and puts us right back into the same Good Girl/Bad Girl trap women struggle to get out of. The photos may be a mild embarrassment to Focus on the Family, but for the most part those folks are beyond shame. Carrie Prejean is a young woman whose feelings must be hurt by being put on the spot, ‘outed’ and talked about. If she thinks the pageant was an apocalyptic battle between God and Satan, she’s probably no more grandiose than most bloggers. No one likes a bully. Knock it off, guys.

  1. The lady seems like a very nice kid, and it’s obvious all those “high-powered” intellects, so critical of her, were actually watching her on television, instead of reading Plato, as I am sure all of them do every spare moment. Let her be.

  2. IT SEEMS THAT MISS CALIFORNIA WANTS HER CAKE AND EAT IT TOO. ON ONE HAND SHE IS A CONSERVATIVE ABOUT MARRIAGE AMONGST GAYS AND ON THE OTHER HAND SHE IS LIBERAL ABOUT SHOWING HER BODY OFF IN PARTLY NUDE FROM THE WAIST UP. IF SHE IS MISS GOODY TWO SHOES THAT IS NOT THE WAY TO SHOW IT. YOU CANNOT BE LIBERAL AND CONSERVATIVE AT THE SAME TIME. ITS LIKE BEING PREGNANT EITHER YOU ARE OR YOU ARE NOT PREGNANT NOTHING IN BETWEEN. YOU CANNOT BE BOTH A CONSERVATIVE AND A LIBERAL IN THE SAME BREATH JUST LIKE YOU CANNOT BE A LITTLE BIT PREGNANT THERE IS NOT PARTLY PREGNANT EITHER YOU ARE OR YOU ARE NOT PREGNANT. SHE SHOULD POSE FOR PLAYBOY AND/OR PENTHOUSE MAGAZINES AND FORGET ABOUT MAKING STATEMENTS ABOUT GAYS OR NOT AND WHAT DOES SHE KNOW ABOUT MARRIAGE ANYWAY, SHE HAS NEVER BEEN MARRIED AND SHE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE GAY COMMUNITY SHE SHELLS OUT THE SCARE TACTICS OF REPUBLICAN EXTREME RIGHT WING OF THAT PARTY.I BET THAT HER PARENTS ARE REPUBLICANS AND SHE IS STILL LIVING WITH HER PARENTS AND HAS NEVER BEEN ON OR OWN EXCEPT LIVING AT A COLLEGE SOMEWHERE,
