It’s 4:21 pm, almost five hours left before the polls close. If you want to play a part in the most important primary Rhode Island has ever seen, now’s the time. According to the news, Secretary of State Ralph Mollis is predicting 30% turnout. What about the other 70%? If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.
At my polling place, Church of the Redeemer on Hope St., the meter was over 300 by 8:30am. I saw the mayor walking out after casting his secret ballot. How forgiving is he, I wonder? Hillary Clinton was represented by some distinguished Rhode Islanders. Myrth York and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse were greeting voters at the door. Hard to beat that kind of star quality, but I picked up a lawn sign and waved it to represent the Obama campaign.
A steady stream of people came and voted. The youth vote was not apparent, most of the people I saw were older. Maybe the youth will come out in force in the evening, after work and school. It’s a great day, a little rain, but otherwise we could not ask for more perfect weather.
I stuck it out with my Obama sign for about three hours before I had to leave to go to work. At times, it had been just me and Myrth York standing out there. I looked at her and said, “We’ll be on the same side in November. She smiled.
The 30% number surprised me too. What was the other 70% doing? They really don’t care?? I can’t understand that.
